I am Sheri Kohn and I am the BMYP club Chair.
My association with BMYP (formerly Junior BLOC) began in 1989 when my eldest son, Oliver, joined what was then Mini BLOC. As he was tall for his age, he was asked several times to “guest” into Junior BLOC shows to be a part of their chorus. As we all know boys are always in demand!! He auditioned and became a full-time member at the age of 11 in 1992.
There began my long association with what would become BMYP.
I soon became a part of the BMYP committee and served as Club Secretary and person in charge of Props. For a while I was also on the Mini’s committee with my two younger sons, Max and Josh, in that club. It was certainly a busy time!!
BMYP was started over 50 years ago and Peter Milne was the club chairman for the first 25 years. When he decided to retire, he handed over the reins to me for safe keeping which was a lot of responsibility, but a great honour.
I think my first show in solo charge was a concert at Westbury-on-Trym village hall in 1999.
During my time with BMYP I have mostly worked with Vicki Klein as our Director/Choreographer, and we have worked successfully together with several different Musical Directors winning many NODA and Rose Bowl awards.
I have enjoyed the company and support of numerous different committee members over the years, many of whom have become close, lifelong friends.
When away from the admin side of things, I have enjoyed sourcing and making props and helping backstage. It’s a big learning curve, but one I have come to love.
It has been an honour to have been involved with BMYP. What started as a hobby, feels sometimes like a full-time job, but has been a huge and important part of my life and one which I hold dear.
